Pada pola soal TOEFL,

..., Sarah rarely misses her basketball shots.

A. An excellent basketball player

Appositive Phrase merupakan sekelompok kata yang berfungsi memberikan keterangan tambahan kepada subject dan object. Appositive Phrase dapat berupa noun, adjective, adverb, atau prepositional phrase, berikut contohnya.

1. Sebagai Noun

=== He had asked Mr, Ardi, a prominent lawyer, to represent him in court.

2. Sebagai adjective

=== The professor, unaware that many of his students were asleep, went right on lecturing.

3. Sebagai adverb

=== The gentlemen over there by door is our accountant.

4. Prepositional phrase

=== Mr Rudi, in a hurry to get home, took a taxi from the airport.

Susunan kalimat dengan Appositive Phrases.

1. Perubahan adjective Clause menjadi Appositive Phrases.

Adjective clause dengan bentuk BE dapat disingkat menjadi bentuk appositive phrase dengan menyisakan tambahan (complement) setelah bentuk BE, contoh :

Contoh 1

=== Jim, who is a really good mechanic, is fixing the car.

menjadi 

=== Jim, a really good mechanic, is fixing the car.

Contoh 2

=== The person who is responsible for the damage will have o pay for it.

=== The person responsible for the damage will have to pay for it.

2. Letak appositive Phrase dalam kalimat

Biasanya appositive phrase terletak sesuadh noun yang diterangkan dan diantara dua tanda koma.

Contoh :

• Andre, eager to get ahead in his career, worked hard day and night.
• The man, aware that he had mad a mistake, tried to correct it.
• The high-powered computer machine, the most powerful of its type, was finally readied for use.
• The new tile pattern, yellow flowers on a white background, really brightens up the room.

Namun, appositive phrase juga mampu diletakkan pada awal atau selesai kalimat, dengan catatan mengacu pada subject main verb-nya.

Contoh :

• His uncle refuse all help that was offered him, a proud and unbending man.
• Andre worked hard day and night, eager to get ahead in his career.

Dalam kalimat tersebut, The Canadian merupakan subject dari kalimat, dan rumpang yang harus diisi merupakan bentuk appositive. Maka, kita harus mencari bentuk kelompok kata (frase) yang berfungsi menunjukkan keterangan tambahan kepada subject tersebut. Pilihan C (One of the iconic train trips in the world), sebagai pilihan yang sempurna, alasannya berfungsi menawarkan keterangan pada subject (The Canadian).

Contoh soal TOEFL,

Dalam pola diatas, sarah merupakan subject dan kata misses ialah kata kerja (verb) lantaran tidak ada koma yang memisahkannya. maka, jawaban A merupakan pilihan yang sempurna untuk isian tersebut.
